I’ll have y’all know that I was Kindle-resistant for the longest time. I fancied myself a “book purist” and vowed to continue to read only traditional printed books. I always had a dog-eared paperback in my purse and two or three books on the nightstand (along with a flashlight for middle-of-the-night-don’t-want-to-wake-up-my-husband reading). I was resolute. And I was more than a little snooty about it.
Then I got my first iPad, and I realized that if I used the Kindle app I could not only keep whatever random book I was reading with me at all times, but I could also always have the entire Harry Potter collection along with the LOTR trilogy IN MY PURSE. When I discovered that Amazon offers tons of free books for Kindle every day, it was like I hit the lottery. Not only are there lots of great kids’ books (see Heather’s post from yesterday), but you can also find free books on just about any subject you care to read about. From fluffy beach reads to War and Peace, from cookbooks to Shakespeare’s sonnets, there is something for everyone.

When I was a kid, the worst punishment my mom could dish out was to take away my book. I had my nose in one pretty much all the time — on the bus, at the breakfast table, under the covers with a flashlight. Mom claimed I was neglecting everything else — homework, chores, playing outside — in favor of reading a good book. I said she should be delighted to have a daughter who loved reading so much. We never did learn to see eye-to-eye on this topic.

Wow! Amazing! Perfect! These exclamations have all come out of my mouth as I tried this brand-new app for reading instruction and early learning (target age is 3-6 years old). It is one of the smartest apps I've seen for this age group, and it is climbing the charts--it's currently the #6 FREE app in Education (it does have in-app purchases, but provides a ton of content for free.)
I don't simply highly recommend this app--I INSIST that if you ever even breathe near a child from 3-6 (or who will someday be 3-6), you download this now. This means parents, teachers, therapists--it's really that great. The free content is so worth it, and for those kids who take to the program, the in-app purchases for multi-packs are currently on sale!
