I must admit that when I was given this app to review I was unfamiliar with the characters (it’s been a long time since my kids were preschoolers), but a little research turned me onto the fact that Ben and Holly are the stars of the immensely popular British television show aimed at the preschooler set. If your child is already a fan of Ben and Holly, then this app is sure to delight. But don’t worry if the characters are new to you, the activities will still enchant the preschooler at your house.
Ben and Holly’s party room is set up with cakes on the table and four games to choose from. Your youngster can play any of the following:
- Design a Gift. Your little one can choose a gift (a horn, a wand, or a hat) and decorate it as they choose. Once each is finished your child can try them out, though this does require you to do things like let the app use the camera and microphone.
- Piñata. Choose between two piñatas and then tap and swipe until all of the treats are released.
-
Balloon Pop. What party would be complete without a balloon drop? Your kiddo has thirty seconds to pop as many balloons as possible.
- Elf Band. Choose five elves to make up your band. Then keep them from getting hit by falling notes to keep the music going. And by all means don’t let them get hit by the falling wands! You can jazz up your elf concert with lights and confetti to make it a real party!
Many of the activities end up with a reward at the completion that users can collect in their party bag. At the end of play, little users will have collected a ton of treats!
What I liked:
- Cute, engaging characters. I’m sure I would have appreciated them even more if I had kids who watched the show.
- It’s pressure free fun play. Even when a child “fails” at part of a game (like letting the notes or wands hit the ground in the Elf Band game), the result is really quite cute.
- The amount of content is kind of limited and didn’t hold my test subject’s interest for too terribly long.
- I felt that each of the activities had room for improvement. A few more options for color and design would, or the choice of more than two types of piñata – things like that could really help round this app out.
Overall, though, I found this app to be quite cute, even with its limitations. The fact that it is completely free helps push the rating up to a strong four stars.
