Bottom line: Lingokids is developed to help youngsters aged 2-6 learn English. While the app is primarily directed at children learning English as a second language, this app could also be useful for children whose native tongue is English to help them strengthen their verbal skills.

Lingokids is an educational app designed to help toddlers, preschoolers, and early elementary-aged children learn English. This app is composed of multiple games, videos, and songs with activities to help strengthen a child’s grasp on the English language. There are fifteen different topic categories each with multiple activities within. The categories consist of things like food, clothes, and numbers. There are also categories for opposites and prepositions. I think the favorite category at our house was the family category. With so many types of words to choose from, there are plenty of activities to keep kids engaged and to expose them to more of the language.
Within each category are groups of activities. There are listening games, where kids follow simple directions. There are videos made by some of the teachers at Lingokids that teach kids short language lessons. There are songs and videos to entertain and teach about the subjects. And there are activities like letter tracing letters and writing exercises that expose children to all of the letters and introduce phonics with some cool interactive animations.
I understand that the “my teacher” videos are a newer feature for the app, and they are a really engaging way to emphasize the objective for each lesson. The app also has songs and videos that highlight exclusive content from Oxford University Press's "Little Friends" preschool text. These songs and videos help to reinforce each lesson, too.
I’ve got to mention some “tech-y” stuff about the app. For those of us who struggle with limited space on our iPads, they have a neat new download manager that helps you control how much space the app occupies. The app also has an offline mode that makes it convenient to play even when there is no internet access. And for those families with more than one child? It has multi-account support so that you can track each kid’s progress separately with weekly progress reports.
Also, Lingokids is free for educators. You can visit their website at www.monkimun.com to find out more.
Overall, this app offers a generous amount of content that exposes young children to more than 3,000 English words. With multiple activities and entertaining videos, this app should be a great resource to help learn the English language. My only complaint is the monthly subscription. I often find that I will subscribe to things and not use them as much as I should, which makes me feel like I am wasting money. This app has a fairly steep monthly price of $9.99 (but Smart Apps readers can get a 25% discount with the promo code smartapps25), so folks will want to make sure they are diligent about using it to get their money’s worth. Even with that drawback, I give this app four stars.
