Pokemon Go is a wildly popular, recently released app for both the iOS and Android platforms. Developed by Niantic Labs, formerly part of Google, it is a free-to-play app, with in-app purchases, that involves hunting down and capturing Pokemon in the physical world, via augmented reality. Mixing exercise and gaming sounds good, right? Well, not all good, unfortunately. There have been some serious issues.
While a wide variety of people are enjoying Pokemon Go and reporting more physical activity than usual, the app has some risks that you should be aware of.
There have been reports of physical accidents as people stare at their phones, not paying attention to where they are going, as well as car accidents. There have even been reports of crimes, including 8 to 9 armed robberies in Missouri. In those robberies, four men were charged with using the app to track down their victims.
Possibly the biggest issue of all is the security risk. For iOS users, the sign-up process gives full and total access to the user's Google account. That includes Gmail, Google Drive, search history, Google Maps history, and more. What could potentially be done with this information is not clear, but it is a rather big risk to take.
