Throughout my years writing for Smart Apps for Kids and especially with the special needs division I have come across many apps designed for children and adults with Autism. When I first turned on the Autism Core Skills - Academic, Communication, and Social Skills Plus Data app the first thing I noticed was how well it was designed to work for each child’s specific needs. This is a well thought out and comprehensive app that is designed to help children with Autism grow and develop a variety of skills.

The past few months I have taken a hiatus from Smart Apps for Kids. When I learned that Autism Core Skills by Infiniteach Inc was on the list of articles, I knew I had to come out of my hiatus to talk about what an amazing app this is for the Autism community. As many of you may know, I have two elementary age kids, one of which is on the Autism spectrum. I first started working for Smart App for Kids in the Special Needs division and am always on the lookout for great apps that tailored for kids with Autism. Autism Core Skills really stood out of the pack for me.
I was impressed right out of the box with the student profile. As any parent or professional dealing with children with Autism knows, each child is extremely unique. This app allows not only for basic customization but also for ability level. Is the child somewhat verbal? Is he a rules follower? What is his attention span? The profile takes all of this into account when providing lessons. Adults can even turn off the background image is that proves to be too much of a distraction.
Not only does the app allow for customizations as far as abilities go, but it also tailors the app towards each child’s interest. My son hates sports, but loves the ocean and school. I was able to quickly customize his interests from ten popular choices including pirates, animals, farm, trains, food and more. One of the best ways to get a child to use an app is to make sure it interests them. I have spent many hours looking for the best ocean apps that teach math because that was the only thing my son cared about to then have him like trains more than ocean life. I love that this app allows me to keep the same amazing content but customize his interests without loosing any of his progress.
This app also helps children expand socially by allowing the addition of friends. Adults and other children can be linked to the child’s account to allow them to play games and communication activities together. Children can continue working on social skills in the lesson area itself.
The app is meant to be used as a tool between an adult and child. Lessons cover communication skills, work on taking turns and sharing, as well as preschool through first grade common core standards in math and reading. Activities are automatically recorded in to data collection statistics which can be displayed, shared or even printed. They even provide free printable curriculum to work on skills away from the iPad.
Once a lesson is set up by the adult, students are not able to go back and change any of the settings because there is a numerical lock which is set up by the adult. In order to get out of a lesson screen, the user needs to tap and hold in the upper right corner and then enter in the numerical code they set up once prompted.
You can register for a 7 day free trial as a parent, teacher, therapist or other. This app is free to download and includes a free 7 day trial to test it out. This is not one of those “free trials” that only includes a fraction of the features. Users get one week of full access to all curriculum and features before needing to pay for the yearly plan offered as an in-app purchase. So go ahead and give Autism Core Skills a test drive and see for your self all that this app has to offer.
