Bottom Line: Writing Wizard — Kids Learn to Write Letters & Words is the standard by which I judge all other handwriting apps on the market. With light, non-intrusive background music, reward-driven sound effects and playful celebratory animated letter games, the app motivates children to continue with their handwriting practice. Parents and teachers will love all the customizations and detailed reports. I’m so excited to share that this app is now available for Android users!

I admit, although I was just asked to review Writing Wizard by L’Escapadou, this has been my go-to handwriting app since I discovered it in the fall of 2013. Both of my kids struggled with different aspects of handwriting, and Writing Wizard truly helped them improve. Kids can practice drawing shapes, uppercase letters, lowercase letters, numbers and even words. With the choice of three different fonts, and the ability to modify letter size, difficulty and other features, this app has all the customizations a parent or teacher would need from an app.
In the default mode, each letter is shown, said aloud and then pronounced phonetically. A short animation demonstrates how the letter is formed, and the child is shown where to begin tracing. Upon successful completion, one of four games is available where children can interact with the letter. All of the steps are customizable, including how long the child is allowed to play the letter game.
The beauty of this app is that it is highly customizable. There are three different font choices and five modes with increasing difficulty. The five modes are customizable in and of themselves, so adults can fine-tune and challenge children in ways that are most beneficial to them.
One new feature added to this app is the opportunity to trace words. The app comes preloaded with more than 30 three-letter words as well as the ability to build your own lists. This can help reinforce sight words as well as spelling words the child may be working on in school. This feature also allows the child to practice writing his or her own name.
The audio for user-created words as well as preloaded letters and words can easily be customized for each student. Truly, there is not much to this app that cannot be customized to best suit a child's needs.
Parents and teachers will love the detailed reports available. They can see what kids have done, including the ability to replay and export the tracings to view kids' progress. Unlimited user profiles are available to easily track multiple children.
Many apps find it difficult to balance educational benefit with engaging entertainment for children. Writing Wizard is a perfect blend of the two. Don’t just take my word for it — go check out Heather H’s five-star reviews for both the original version of Writing Wizard and Cursive Writing Wizard.
