Hairy Phonics 1 is designed to teach nine different phonemes or sounds, and is meant to be used with those who have already learned individual letter sounds. It's developed by the same people who brought us Dyslexia Quest, a popular app designed to support young kids with dyslexia (and a lot of fun to play!) I've worked with a few students who really struggled to master the phonemic awareness for digraphs (two letters that make one sound, like 'ch') or remember what it means when two letters are together (like 'ck'). Work on these concepts with Hairy Phonics 1!
To teach phonemic awareness in a fun app format, please support Smart Apps For Kids and use our download button (iPad/iPhone, $2.99 to FREE):
There are several more Hairy Phonics apps, and the precursor Hairy Alphabet, too. So now is the time to get one for FREE, and decide if they work for your specific needs. Teachers and parents of kids from about 4-6 should download immediately, and parents of struggling readers or with diagnosed dyslexia of any age should take a look, too.

If you enjoyed the award winning Hairy Letters you'll love Hairy Phonics.
After learning the alphabet the next step is the introduction of consonant digraphs -
where two consonants join together and make one sound.
- Learn 9 phonemes (sounds): sh, ch, th, ck, ff, ll, ss, zz, ng
- Guides your child through a structured sequence of learning.
- Phonic animations link an action with the sound.
- Trace the letters with your finger.
- Play games to blend the phonemes into a whole word.
- Save all the Hairies and see them dance.
Hairy Phonics develops phonemic awareness.
This is a particularly important skill for those with dyslexia.
Designed for 4-6 years.
