It’s wintertime in Sunshine Garden, so come along with Ella Bella Bingo to have some snowy fun. This festive app from developer Rock Pocket AS offers your child seven fun activities (and a jazzy rendition of her song) to enjoy. Geared toward kids ages 3-6, Ella Bella Winter Fun has puzzles and games all based around the character Ella Bella Bingo from her own popular television show.
First play a fun matching game. This traditional memory matching game has three levels of difficulty to choose from. Match pairs of snowmen or lovely holiday packages. Or match pictures of the delightful Ella herself.
Then choose any of the six jigsaw puzzles to complete. Each puzzle is made up of seven different pieces that make up festive holiday scenes. These simple puzzles are easy enough for even the youngest preschoolers to enjoy.
Next your little one can build his own snowman by adding branches for arms and a carrot for the nose. Give the snowman many accessories to complete his look. My kids took a very . . . um . . . non-traditional route in building their snowman and gave him a horn and three eyes. What can I say? We don’t get much snow in Alabama for them to build real snowmen. Once your snowman is built, the next activity puts him (or her) into a custom snow globe. Just shake the iPad to send the snow flying.
Your kiddo can then build a tower of Christmas packages. Colorful presents of all shapes and sizes can be stacked on top of each other until it finally starts to wobble and fall. How high can you go?
There is a coloring section that has five winter scenes that your child can color in any way she sees fit. There are multiple tools for coloring in from paintbrushes to chalk to the always-popular tap and fill. There is also a blank page available where your little one can turn her inner artist loose.
But perhaps the most exciting game is the raucous, downhill bobsled run. Using arrows at each side of the screen, users can guide Ella Bella on her sled as she flies down the hill, avoiding obstacles and collecting stars. Ella Bella can even use ramps to make jumps to collect more stars, but if she hits an obstacle she loses stars. With three levels of difficulty, this game becomes quite a challenge at the most difficult level.
What I liked:
- This is a very cute app with an engaging main character. The artwork is cute and the functionality of this app is really quite good.
- The activities are varied enough that there is something for every child to enjoy. My daughter always loves the coloring activities, and my son was pleased to find the bobsled game. He’s a bit older than the target market for this app, but the most difficult levels gave him enough of a challenge to make it fun.
What I liked less or might change:
- I’d love it if in the bobsled game, just on the easiest level, they didn’t take away stars for hitting the obstacles.
- I wish that some of the other activities would add multiple levels of difficulty. For example, it would be great if the jigsaw puzzles were available with more pieces. I think this would keep this app from being limited to just the youngest preschoolers in some of its categories.
Overall, I’m giving this app a good solid four star rating. Its retail price of $2.99 is probably on the high end of the range for this type of app, but it’s not completely unreasonable. It’s a good quality app with a broad range of activities that has the added bonus right now of a cute winter holiday theme.
