Bottom Line: Equate Formula Solver is a handy app from the developers at Nurdture to help us navigate the many math and science formulas intended to help us. But it’s not scary . . . really. It’s exciting and massive and easy to use. For older kids all the way up to adults, this app is one that you should have in your arsenal. FREE FOR A LIMITED TIME!

I know a lot of you hear the words “math app” and your eyes start to glaze over a bit and you begin humming “Let It Go” under your breath to hold back the tide of fear that threatens to overwhelm you when math gets out of your comfort zone. Never fear, though. Equate Formula Solver makes finding and using formulas a lot less scary.
The formulas in Equate Formula Solver are divided into three basic sections (Math, Physics, and Chemistry) along with a “Nerd Out” section that lists all the formulas in one place, because who doesn’t get a little thrill at seeing more than 200 formulas all in one place? I do, anyway. There is also a Favorites section where the user can bookmark often used or favorite formulas for easy access at a future date.
When you need to use a formula, it’s as easy as locating the correct one and plugging in the known variables to get your answer. It’s that simple. There is also a section at the bottom of each formula page that either encourages you to “practice it” with a simple word question, or gives you the opportunity to “learn it” with a bit more description of the formula's use. This section also includes a link to an expanded Wikipedia page with an even greater level of info.
The app includes formulas you can use in everyday life (like calculating tax or tips) right alongside the formulas you will need to build your own flux capacitor. Okay, I might be kidding about that one, because I’m not exactly sure what formulas would be needed to make a flux capacitor. But I can guarantee you that if such formulas exist, you can find them here. And they will be easy to use.
Plus, if you are so inclined, you can share formulas through social media, which kind of makes the whole world your study group.
What I liked:
- This app easy to use, even for those less adept at math, chemistry, or physics. All you have to do is find the formula that you want and plug in the known quantities. The app does the rest for you. And then it helps explain to you the whys of what it has done.
- It is bright, clean, and uncluttered.
- Is it wrong that I have kind of a crush on these nerds? There is a lot of wit and interesting tidbits built into this app, from the funny intro video to the random, scrolling smart-folk quotes on the home page.
What I might change:
- Nothing. No, seriously, this app is nearly perfect at what it is designed to be. It helps to take the fear out of formulas by giving a clear, concise method of use with the added bonus of links to Wikipedia entries that help to further explain concepts that the user might have questions about.
- Okay, if I were wishing . . . I might add in a separate section with problems or puzzles that would give users a chance to put into practice the formulas that they are learning.
I don’t want to minimize this app by just calling it a “calculator” or even by calling it just a “formula solver.” It’s a gigantic resource for older kids and adults (and we don’t get enough apps for our older kids around here). Even at the original price of $1.99, I would call it a must-have app. And I don’t say that lightly. But right now this app has gone free for a short time, so I’m calling it a “drop-what-you’re-doing-and-download-this-now” app.
If this app is an example of what we can expect to see from the guys at Nurdture, I can’t wait to see what comes next.
