Bottom Line: Preposition Remix is a therapy app addressing the use of prepositions and following directions. Designed for kids ages 4 and up, it is a nice app to add to your therapy collection. While this app focuses mainly on receptive language, with a few changes you can also work on expressive or written language as well.

Preposition Remix from Smarty Ears is a single user app designed for children ages 4+. Designed to help children learn and use prepositions (e.g. above, under, next to, etc) and follow directions, this app features 20 prepositions that can be addressed randomly or in a set order.
On the home screen, you can go to the support page to learn more about the app, request support, watch a video tutorial, backup or restore from iTunes, or view more apps. You can also view reports, select game play, or adjust your settings. This seems to be the only area in which you can adjust the settings, including what prepositions you want to work on and if they will come in a random or specific order. If you deselect random, the words come in sets of ten, and all ten need to be completed before moving on to the next word. Please keep in mind that if you deselect random, you are always starting back at the same concept unless you change the concepts again before you begin therapy.
Once you change the settings, they apply to all users. Additionally, my students are infamous for only listening to part of the directions (one of the reasons they receive therapy), so they found it a little tricky to just touch the desired target word, not the group (e.g.”Touch the bananas above the scale” means you have to touch just the bananas, not the scale showing the bananas above the scale. I’ll be honest, I made this mistake myself). There is no repeat button either, so your kiddos really have to be paying attention the first time around.
While Preposition Remix targets mainly receptive language, I think you could make some changes and address expressive language as well. After the student has identified the correct preposition, you could have them come up with a different sentence and respond verbally or in writing. This would then address sentence structure, as well as expressive language. With that modification, I think this would be a good app to add to your therapy materials. I really liked the ability to address one or only a few target prepositions at a time. This is a great option for some of my students who really struggle with prepositions!
Although you could make this app work for expressive language, I really wish the developer had made some additions to address it without a work-around being necessary. For instance, I think a record button would be a nice addition to this app. I don’t know about you, but my students love to hear themselves talk on the iPad. One other thing I felt was missing was the option for homework. This is a nice feature I have come to enjoy and use in other Smarty Ear apps, so I was surprised it was not on this one. Smarty Ears did just recently release an update that includes rewards for Preposition Remix. After completing ten answers, the child gets an instrument to collect.
Overall, Preposition Remix is one tool that you can easily incorporate into your therapy to teach prepositions. At times, it may feel somewhat limited, but it is a great place to start or continue practice with prepositions or following directions. With some changes, you can definitely work on written or expressive language and sentence structure easily as well.
