I’ll have y’all know that I was Kindle-resistant for the longest time. I fancied myself a “book purist” and vowed to continue to read only traditional printed books. I always had a dog-eared paperback in my purse and two or three books on the nightstand (along with a flashlight for middle-of-the-night-don’t-want-to-wake-up-my-husband reading). I was resolute. And I was more than a little snooty about it.
Then I got my first iPad, and I realized that if I used the Kindle app I could not only keep whatever random book I was reading with me at all times, but I could also always have the entire Harry Potter collection along with the LOTR trilogy IN MY PURSE. When I discovered that Amazon offers tons of free books for Kindle every day, it was like I hit the lottery. Not only are there lots of great kids’ books (see Heather’s post from yesterday), but you can also find free books on just about any subject you care to read about. From fluffy beach reads to War and Peace, from cookbooks to Shakespeare’s sonnets, there is something for everyone.
To read these books on an iPad (and some on iPhone — check Amazon for your device compatibility), first download the FREE Kindle app and register it with your Amazon account. Get to reading, and support Smart Apps for Kids, just by clicking our download link (FREE, iPad/iPhone):
** Only Amazon can control when an e-book is free or not. The prices of these books are verified to be correct at the time of this post. We make no guarantees otherwise. Please verify on Amazon before downloading that the price is still free.**
Pride and Prejudice by Jane Austen
My ragged, worn-out, tear-stained copy of Pride and Prejudice is now put away to give to my little princess one day. I can now immerse myself in the classic love story of Elizabeth Bennet and Mr. Darcy any time I want.
Bacon Recipes (a Circle of Friends Cookbook)
There is really no way to capture with words how crazy I am about bacon. So, a FREE cookbook with 25 bacon recipes? Score!
Practical Duct Tape Crafts (various Instructables authors)
This eBook is actually a collection of 21 Instructables that show you how to make various things using only duct tape. Because you never know when you’ll need a duct tape wallet, right? Or a duct tape sleeve for your laptop or tablet? I’ve always been a firm believer that you can fix almost anything with duct tape, and now I see that you can make almost anything, too.
This is a free excerpt from Rob Lowe’s memoir Stories I Only Tell My Friends that recounts his time working on the set of The Outsiders. I’m not going to tell you how old I was back when I first fell in love with Ponyboy and Sodapop and Dallas, but this behind the scenes look at some of the biggest stars of my generation was a really fun read.
Surviving Summer Vacation by Kathy Lipp
For the first time ever, I will stay home with my kids over summer break. I am excited and a little bit frightened at the prospect of being together full-time without slipping into a rut or driving each other insane. I think that Kathy Lipp’s Surviving Summer Vacation: Plans and Prayers for a Mom’s Sanity will be a useful guideline in helping us have a fun and productive summer.

Kelli’s only disappointment with reading books using a Kindle app is that she can’t read them in the bath.
