We are introduced to Butch the bulldog pup first in the story mode of the app. In this story we are shown Butch’s idea of what monsters can be from three headed monsters to stinky goats with beards. But as we wrap up the story we come to find that the monsters we create are all in our mind. This is illustrated by using the front-facing camera on your iPad to show the user that the familiar things that they see in the monsters really come from them.
Butch encourages kids that if they are alone and scared and a monster comes to stand firm and tell those monsters to leave them alone, believing that once a child stands up to their monsters they will begin to see that the monster isn’t as scary as they thought.
The interactive story takes the same adventure and adds in interactive elements on every other page. With fantastical monsters made in collage fashion, kids can begin to see that the monsters in the story are made up of everyday things and are not so scary after all. There are plenty of interactive features to entertain and bring the story to life.
The newest upgrade brought us the Monster Moogle Collage Maker, which allows your kids to design their own monsters and see that they aren't so scary. The unique collage aspect allows users to make their own monsters from pieces and parts. This collage maker has a lovely user interface, which presents the kids with the opportunity to create their artworks as well as write short stories about their work. This is saved to a special in-app gallery and is wonderful way to enhance creative writing and 'design' skills.
I’ve got to admit, though, that my favorite part was the section introducing the entire cast of characters. Each of Butch’s monsters comes with their own little clever back story, giving them unique personalities. Parents are sure to chuckle at the description of the scapegoats Thelma & Louise. The introduction of Ringo, George, and John delighted me, but also made me wonder where on earth Paul is?
Monster Moogle is a creative and thoughtful way to help children confront and deal with their monsters and to give them an artistic outlet to bring their “monsters” to life.
